WHEELS
![]()
Hern's designs features heavy flanges and webbing. Double-flanged, Single-flanged and Traction wheels are available in steel and iron. Double-flanged wheels are available in diameters from two inches to four feet and beyond. The Kiln cart wheels, which are eight-inch diameter, and double-flanged wheels, and usually in cast iron, are purchased by the thousands. It is their volume of production which keeps prices on these heavy movers low.
People working with fast moving cargo or over head hoists choose single-flanged wheels. The single-flanged design, with its unique face taper is self aligning in travel and gentle to rail. This design is considered self cleaning. Also available is the Traction Wheel (which has no flange).

The cable sheave is of special interest. It is specified by root diameter and by the diameter of the rope passing over it. The most common bore for a cable sheave is bronze-bushed with grease-groove and zerk. Other wheels like flat-belt pulleys, box chain idlers, long-link chain idlers and roll presses are less common. Their rarity makes them more valuable.
Specify whatever bore diameter can you want, but remember that the hub diameter will be twice the bore diameter or better. You can specify Length-Through-Bore up to four times the face width. Four to six inches are most common.
