PRODUCTION CAPABILITIES
HERN IRON WORKS melts and refines iron in a direct arc furnace, which offers several metalurgical and economic advantages for cast iron production. Our geographical location provides us with abundant power and raw materials at favorable rates. We use the green sand molding method, and also have chemically bonded sand, shell core, and oil cores available. Our molding capabilities range from 12 x 18 squeezer molding, through 30 x 36 - 8 over 8 and 40 x 40 - 10 over 10 to floor molding up to 8,000 pound poured weight. Our common sizes run through several hundred pounds.
We have a complete iron foundry, as well as machine shop, pattern shop, and engineering facilities at one plant site.
Our specialty is quick delivery of reasonable priced, short run commercial castings with machining as required in our captive machine shop, and the personal attention to your order that you would expect from a family owned and operated business.![]()

ADVANTAGES OF HERN IRON WORKS GREY IRON:
HERN IRON WORKS can take your idea from concept to finished prodcut all under one roof, with our in-house engineering facilities, pattern shop, foundry, and machine shop. There is only one overhead charge, one shipping charge, and one company to deal with to assure your satisfaction. Using castings from HERN IRON WORKS on your product gives it the appearance of a well-engineered product by a reputable manufacturer, as opposed to something that was hurriedly fabricated from stock shapes on a budget. Castings give your product credibility and sales appeal, and lock your customers in to you for replacement parts.
- Grey Iron is the most cost effective engineering materials, combining strength, castability, machineability, corrosion, resistance, self-lubricating properties, vibration dampening and rigidity at a low price.
- Grey Iron's excellent castability allows you to place the metal where it is needed in whatever shape desire, without being constrained by the use of "standard" shapes such as angles, channels, and flat stock.
- Grey Iron's inherent rigidity means that your product will not be bending or twisting, but will remain exactly as you design it. Wherever rigidity counts, be it in lathe beds or engine blocks, there is simply no substitute for cast iron.
- Cast Iron is one of the best engineering metals for corrosion resistance, and in many cases is more cost effective than stainless steel. We can make special alloys that are even more corrosion resistant for special applications such as boiler grates.
- Cast Iron as produced in our electric arc furnace has superior self lubrication and abrasion resistant properties. For higher abrasion resistance, special alloy cast iron is readily available.
- Cast Iron is one of the easiest and least expensive metals to machine, and remains rigid when you machine it. What you cut is what you get, there is no spring-back with cast iron.
- Cast Iron's vibration dampening properties mean that your machinery will run quieter, smoother, and with less energy than when made with other materials.
- Finally, a no-nonsense analysis of cast iron will show that it has one of the highest strength-per-dollar of any engineering material.
Patterns are made quickly and accurately based on your drawings or a sample of the component you want cast in iron or steel. Whether your component is something you have been using for years or a brand new invention, it can be made at a reasonable price. Most quotes are given immediately or within one day.
