This is the 24-pounder model of 1841. It was mounted on a simple bed and served by a crew of four. It fired a standard 24-pounder shell to a maximum range of 1200 yards.

  PARROTT RIFLE

Parrott Rifle

The Parrott Rifle was developed by Robert Parrott, the supervisor of the West Point Foundry from 1836 to 1867. It was easy to use, cheap to make and quick to produce. It was not the best, but "...the best practical thing that could be got at the time ... ."

The Parrott Rifle was a cast iron cannon, and to reduce the tendency for the barrel to burst, a wrought iron band was shrunk on around the breech. Parrott's basic patents were concerned with the method of shrinking on the band.

With its distinctive eye at the cascable, the U.S. Carronade was considered the logical sea cannon. It was easily secured for controlled recoil. The loop also made rapid dock-to-ship transfer of the weapon safer and quicker.
